Reinventing Multilateral Governance for the 21st Century: UN Reforms and Global Security

22 June | 10:00 – 11:15 (CEST) | Main Stage

About the Session

The world faces a multitude of emerging existential challenges, including health crises, climate change, and major military conflicts, which highlight the fragility of the current multilateral system. Increasing inequalities within and between countries, competing global strategies among great powers, and systemic competition between different potential global orders further underscore the need for robust governance reform. The UN's upcoming Summit of the Future in September 2024 presents a unique opportunity to adopt a Pact for the Future, with commitments to policy goals and solutions to bridge the gap between global challenges and the current governance system. Taking the book “A New Global Deal - Reforming World Governance” recently published by FEPS as a starting point, this session aims to discuss potential pathways for UN reform, explore how the EU and UN can collaborate on initiatives such as the European Green Deal and what progressive demands should look like to foster SDG implementation.
