Over the last decade, the liberal world has been challenged at home by the rise of illiberal nationalism and abroad by authoritarian rulers contemptuous of democracy. A confluence of severe challenges, including Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression, significant shifts in geopolitics, the climate catastrophe and a great degree of uncertainty felt by many suggests that this could be a watershed moment for freedom and democracy in Europe and beyond. In this session, Olaf Scholz and Lea Ypi will discuss and seek to find answers to the question of how progressives can restore the pillars of freedom and peace in Europe.
