Rainer Forst

Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Rainer Forst, Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt and Director of the Normative Orders Research Centre, is one of the most renowned representatives of Frankfurt School critical theory. In 2012, he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize from the German Research Foundation. He has held teaching positions at various universities, including in Berlin, New York, Frankfurt and at Dartmouth College. Having studied with Jürgen Habermas in Frankfurt and with John Rawls at Harvard, Forst received his PhD in Philosophy in 1993 with his Kontexte der Gerechtigkeit (Suhrkamp, 1994; Engl. Contexts of Justice, University of California Press, 2002). His book Toleration in Conflict (Suhrkamp 2003, Cambridge UP 2013) is regarded as a classic in the field. Among his other books are The Right to Justification (2007/2012), Justification and Critique (2011/2013) and Normativity and Power (2015/2017). His most recent book is The Noumenal Republic (Suhrkamp 2021/2024 with Polity Press).
