Polly Toynbee is a Guardian columnist and president of the Social Policy Association. She was previously the BBC's social affairs editor, a columnist for the Independent, co-editor of the Washington Monthly and a feature writer for the Observer. Her books include Hard Work: Life in Low-Pay Britain, when she was working in manual jobs. The Verdict (with David Walker), which analysed the successes (and some failures) of the Blair/Brown Labour government. Her book on the Conservative years, The Only Way is Up, will be published immediately after the election in July. Her latest book is a memoir, An Uneasy Inheritance, my family and other radicals.
